Description

This three-day course is geared toward individuals with less than four years experience in the sales and use tax field. The course will discuss the constitutional basis for the tax, leading cases, tax basis and administration of the tax including collection and remittance procedures and audit defense. The format of the course will be a combination of lecture, case study and group discussion. It will also include industry specific sections. This course is geared toward individuals who need to learn the basic concepts on an in-depth level. This class does not require any advance preparation or prerequisites.

Objectives of course:
  • Define relevant terms
  • Review constitutional provisions and practical applications of nexus
  • Define tax base and identify possible exemptions and exclusions
  • Discuss drop shipments
  • Review special taxing issues, including bulk sales, mergers, close of business and bankruptcy
  • Develop audit administration and planning techniques
  • Discuss current industry and special audit issues
  • Review various administrative issues related to the sales tax function, including registration, information gathering, taxability decisions, return filing and EDI/EFT issues
  • Identify steps to protest an audit
  • Review structuring options of the sales and use tax function in your organization
  • Identify tax research tools and methodology
  • Discuss ethical issues

This course qualifies for 23 hours of CPE.

Rates are available for The Knickerbocker Hotel through the Sales Tax Institute for $239.00/night (single/double) plus tax for June 3 -5, 2008.  The same rate will be available for three nights before and after these dates on a space available basis.  Room block will be held until May 9, 2008.  Reservations received after this date will be accepted on a space available basis.  Rooms will be guaranteed for late arrival to the traveler’s credit card.  Reservations not cancelled 48 hours prior to date of arrival will be charged one night’s lodging.  Hotel reservations should be made during the registration process.
