This basic course is geared toward individuals who deal with sales and use tax issues as part of their responsibilities but do not have a sales tax background or deal with sales tax in depth. Participants could include individuals from general accounting, accounts payable, sales, purchasing and credit, in addition to general practitioners who would like a general understanding of sales tax concepts. This class does not require any advance preparation or prerequisites.
Objectives of course:
- Define relevant terms, including sales tax, use tax, nexus, tangible personal property, and tax base
- Recognize major exemptions, including resale, interstate commerce, government, manufacturing, service, and construction
- Understand purposes and requirements of exemption certificates
- Develop general understanding of administrative issues regarding tax collection, remittance and reporting
