Montana Proposes Ban on General Statewide Sales Tax

Admin/Rates/Audits/Use Tax

Montana introduced legislation that proposed an amendment to Montana’s Constitution to prohibit a statewide general sales tax and end the possibility that future legislators and Governors could impose a statewide general sales tax. The amendment died in committee and therefore it will not be submitted for voter approval in 2018. Note that the proposed constitutional amendment would only apply to a statewide, broad general sales tax. Montana’s Constitution currently limits a statewide general sales tax to 4%.
