Our clients’ industries vary and include e-commerce, publishing, environmental services, software/computer services, professional services, manufacturing, and construction. Our projects include nexus studies, sales tax risk and liability analyses, voluntary disclosures, registrations, audit defense, research, planning, tax technology implementations and supporting fast growing e-commerce businesses with almost all their sales tax needs. What don’t we do? Recurring Compliance! For that work we partner with other providers to ensure our clients are well supported, automate their compliance process, or train them.

Purpose of Role:

The Experienced Staff Consultant will report directly to the Tax Managers and will focus on providing resolution of sales tax challenges and issues for our clients. This role is integral to success of our consultant team (quick and effective communication to solve problems), our clients (energetic drive to wade through messy problems, create solutions and then communicate the resolutions to the client), and, finally, to our company as a whole (supporting the big picture goals and vision for the future). 

Essential Job Responsibilities (approximate % of time):

  • 80% Client Project Work 
    • Voluntary Disclosure Agreements (VDA) 
    • Sales Tax Risk and Liability Analysis 
    • Registrations 
    • Tax Software Implementations (predominately Avalara and Vertex) with focus on configuration and standard connector implementation 
    • Audits 
    • Research and Consulting 
    • Tax Systems Maintenance 
  • 10% Recurring and Periodic Projects 
    • Notice handling and resolution 
    • Exemption certificate management 
    • Troubleshooting 
  • 10% Administrative 
    • Support Sales Tax Institute and marketing team with writing articles and sales tax content 
    • Internal meetings and activities 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: 2-4 years of full-time Sales Tax experience (some consulting experience preferred).  
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (economics, finance, accounting, or business degrees preferred). 
  • Technology: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and especially Excel), Adobe Acrobat, data automation tools, and experience working with at least one tax engine for configuration of tax rules. 
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with team, clients, and state and local Departments of Revenue; exceptional writing, phone skills, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Analytical/Attention to detail/Accuracy: Strong analytical ability; excellent attention to detail; commitment to accuracy.
