Sam Guevara
Sam is KPMG’s Chicago Partner-in-Charge for Ignition Tax. In this capacity, Sam is responsible for managing a team of automation specialists and data scientists that are skilled in various emerging technologies such as Alteryx, Tableau and various Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and cognitive automation solutions. Prior to this role, Sam led KPMG’s Transaction Tax Systems group whose focus is with third party integrations for various indirect tax systems with ERP financial reporting packages and specializes in working with Oracle, SAP and PeopleSoft financial applications.
Professional and Industry Experience
Sam has served as the project leader for many of the KPMG developed custom solution applications relating to the automation of various transaction tax compliance processes, refund analysis and other tax automation. He has been previously recognized as an Innovation Award winner as project manager and engagement partner for previous transaction tax software implementations (Vertex and ONESOURCE) deployed by US headquartered multi-nationals.
Over the past nineteen years, Sam has worked extensively with Vertex’s Sales and Use Tax products and the Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE Indirect Tax Determination (OITD) (formerly Sabrix) Application Suite. Sam is certified by both Vertex and Thomson Reuters as a Certified Implementer. He has extensive experience in automating the sales and use tax compliance process, including specific experience in the integration of Vertex and ONESOURCE with SAP, PeopleSoft and Oracle Financials R12. Sam has operated as the technical resource and/or lead project manager/engagement partner for many OITD implementations performed within KPMG. This includes custom integrations that include Maximo, Passport, Ariba and EMPAC.
In addition to assisting numerous clients with sales and use tax automation, Sam has performed sales and use tax compliance in an outsourcing role for several Fortune 500 companies. He previously served as the Partner-in-Charge of the National Compliance Center and is responsible for the technology systems that support this practice.
Prior to joining public accounting, Sam was a Senior Tax Auditor with the California State Board of Equalization, primarily conducting sales and use tax field audits of difficult and complex taxpayers in a variety of industries.
