California Offers Sales and Use Tax Relief to Businesses Impacted by LA Wildfires

California has extended the January 31,2025, sales and use tax filing deadline for taxpayers in response to recent wildfires. The new due date is April 30,2025. This exemption was automatically granted to Los Angeles and Ventura County taxpayers who owed less than one million dollars on third quarter returns in 2024. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is also accepting requests and offering relief and extensions to taxpayers who have been affected by the wildfires outside of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

CDTFA relief options include extra time to file, forgiveness of penalties or interest, and creating payment plans.  For taxpayers who were not subject to automatic relief but need assistance, will need to submit a relief request through the CDTFA portal.

Taxpayers who are impacted by the wildfires and who may be entitled to some relief should consider if they would like to apply. This does not mean they will be excused from tax collection, filing, and payment, but does allow some extra time to take care of the requirements. Those taxpayers who would like to apply for relief should apply as quickly as they can. (“California to Provide Tax Relief to Businesses Impacted by Los Angeles Wildfires.” Ca.Gov, 16 Jan. 2025)
