Chicago Extends Tax Payment Due Dates due to COVID-19

To help reduce the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Chicago has extended tax payment due dates for the periods July 2019 through September 2020 for the following taxes:

  • Amusement tax
  • Bottled Water tax
  • Checkout Bag tax
  • Ground Transportation tax
  • Hotel Accommodations tax
  • Parking tax
  • Restaurant tax

For the following tax payment periods, the due dates are revised as follows:

  • For tax payment period July 2019 – February 2020, the revised due date is July 15, 2020
  • For tax payment period March and April 2020, the revised due date is August 17, 2020
  • For tax payment period May and June 2020, the revised due date is September 15, 2020
  • For tax payment period July and August 2020, the revised due date is October 15, 2020
  • For tax payment period September 2020, the revised due date is November 16, 2020

Additionally, the filing deadline for 2020 annual tax returns has been extended from August 17, 2020 to October 15, 2020. To defer tax payments for the above taxes, taxpayers will need to complete a number of steps to report the tax due by the original payment due date including reporting the amount of tax due.
