Colorado To Update Sales Tax Search Function to Include Taxpayer Name and Identification Number

Colorado has enacted legislation that directs the Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR) to update the state’s search engine to allow a sales and use tax license and/or a sales and use tax exemption certificate to be searchable by a Colorado taxpayer’s name and federal identification number.

Currently, the DOR’s search engine only allows sales tax licenses and exemption certificates to be searched for and verified by Colorado sales tax license number. However, a license number from the retailer is not always available for those wishing to use the search engine. By updating the DOR’s search engine to allow searches by taxpayer name or federal identification number, the state is making an effort to assist users who are looking to verify Colorado sales tax licenses or exemption certificates.

The bill will take effect 90 days following adjournment of the General Assembly sine die, assuming no referendum petition is filed. (Colorado Senate Bill 25-018, Signed June 3, 2025)
