Louisiana Grants Sales Tax Filing and Payment Extension for Hurricane Francine Victims

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (DOR) has granted an automatic filing and/or payment extension for taxpayers impacted by Hurricane Francine. The extension is granted to taxpayers whose homes, principal places of business, critical tax records or paid tax preparers are located in the federally declared disaster areas following Hurricane Francine. All 64 parishes in Louisiana are included in the disaster area.

For sales tax returns and payments with original due dates on or after September 11, 2024, and on or before September 30, 2024, the automatic extended due date to file the return and remit payment is October 20, 2024. Note that extensions do not apply for any return or tax that was due before September 11, 2024.

Automatic extensions are based on the taxpayer’s location address on file with the DOR. If a taxpayer’s location address is not within Louisiana, the taxpayer may still be eligible for interest and penalty relief even though an automatic extension did not apply.

Note that filing and/or payment extensions have been granted for other tax types and that due dates vary for other tax types. For additional information, reference the DOR’s information bulletin listed below. (Revenue Information Bulletin No. 24-019, Louisiana Department of Revenue, September 13, 2024)
