Minnesota Clarifies Sales Tax for Online Discounts and Alternative Forms of Payment

The Minnesota Department of Revenue provided updates to its fact sheet that covers Coupons, Discounts, Rewards, Rebates, and Other Forms of Payment. The fact sheet specifically updated the section titled, Daily Deal Website Vouchers and Coupons:

“Discount vouchers and group coupons are purchased online and brought to the retailer for the discount. The purchase of a discount voucher is not taxable. If the item (or service) is taxable, charge sales tax when the voucher or coupon is redeemed.”

Additionally, the fact sheet clarified that cryptocurrency and other alternative forms of payment for buying goods and services should be treated as cash for tax purposes.
