Washington Adopts a Destination-Based Tax System

Effective July 1, 2008, the Washington sales tax due on shipped or delivered goods is based on where the customer receives the product rather than the point from which it is shipped. The change from origin-based to destination-based sales tax collection was required in order for Washington to become a full member state of the Streamlines Sales Tax Project. The goal of the project is to encourage out-of-state retailers to begin charging sales tax on sales into Washington. (News Release, Washington State Department of Revenue)
