Louisiana Will Exempt Diapers and Feminine Hygiene Products

The state of Louisiana passed a bill on June 23, 2021 that will exempt sales of diapers and feminine hygiene products from Louisiana sales tax effective July 1, 2022. The exemption includes child and adult diapers and feminine hygiene products including tampons, sanitary napkins, and panty liners. Louisiana will join more than twenty states with similar exemptions. The issue of sales tax on feminine hygiene products first came into the national spotlight in 2015, and articles have been included in publications such as The New York Times, NPR, and Washington Post in the years since. More than half of states that currently have exemptions for feminine hygiene products enacted them within the past five years, and several states had similar bills introduced during their 2021 sessions. (Louisiana House Bill 7, periodequity.org, Act 449 (H.B. 7), Laws 2021)
