Maine and Texas Governors Sign Sales Tax Exemptions for Firearm Safety

Bills in Maine and Texas have been signed by their state’s respective governors exempting sales of firearm lock boxes, safes, and safety equipment from state sales tax.

Texas Senate Bill 313 was signed on June 14, 2021 after passing the state legislation with bipartisan support, and will exempt items defined as firearm safety equipment, including “a gun lock box, a gun safe, a barrel lock, a trigger lock, a firearm safety manual or electronic publication, or other item designed to ensure the safe handling or storage of a firearm” from sales and use tax effective September 1, 2021.

Maine House Paper 818 was signed on July 9th, 2021 and similarly exempts safes, lockboxes, and triggers or barrel locks specifically designed for firearms. The exemption will come into effect on January 1, 2022.
