Mississippi Changes and Extends Dates for Annual Back to School Sales Tax Holiday

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has signed legislation that makes several changes to the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. The sales tax holiday, which previously took place annually on the last Friday and Saturday in July, will now take place on the second Friday and Saturday in July and be extended by one day to also take place on Sunday.

Mississippi’s back-to-school sales tax holiday applies to sales of clothing and footwear (less than $100 per item) and school supplies (less than $100 per item). The Mississippi Department of Revenue has not yet published guidance for the 2024 back-to-school sales tax holiday, but based on this newly enacted legislation, the 2024 holiday will take place on July 12-14, 2024. (S.B. 2470, Laws 2024)
