New Jersey to Upgrade Tax Filing System, Service Interruption Expected

New Jersey has announced that it will be upgrading its tax filing system for multiple tax types, including sales and use tax. During the upgrade, some of the tax filing and payment systems will be temporarily shut down.

Beginning April 26, 2025, the state’s current online filing and payment systems will be temporarily unavailable for filing. Note that taxpayers will still be able to view prior filings and payments. On May 14, 2025, the online filing and payment systems will be fully restored and available for use.

Due to the system upgrade, all returns and payments included in Phase 1 (which includes Sales and Use Tax) due from May 1 through May 30, 2025, will receive a 30-day extension. No penalty or interest will apply to taxes related to the Phase 1 release. As an example, if a tax return is due on May 20, 2025, the taxpayer will have until June 20, 2025, to file and pay without penalty or interest.

Beginning May 14, 2025, business owners and tax preparers will be able to set up an account on the NJ Tax Portal. The following information will be needed to set up portal access:

Note that portal accounts are not mandatory for filing, but the portal provides multiple benefits for taxpayers, including the ability to view account history and store information for future filings. User guides, FAQs, and videos will be available starting May 14, 2025.

Additionally, the state’s telephone-based sales tax filing system will be permanently discontinued as of April 26, 2025. New Jersey taxpayers will want to take note of the temporary service interruption and new portal to use as of May 14, 2025.
