Overview

The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax (SST) Project is not new. Despite its longevity (project efforts began in 2000!) and the fact that it presents enticing benefits for businesses, not everyone working in sales tax knows about it or thinks it is relevant. What many people don’t understand is that SST impacts EVERY taxpayer operating in the state because SST requires state laws to comply with the terms of the agreement.

The purpose of the SST Project/Agreement is to simplify and modernize sales and use tax administration across the states in order to substantially reduce the burden of tax compliance. There are 23 full member states (plus 1 associate member) of the agreement, which creates headache-reducing uniformity among their sales and use tax laws.

Does the SST Project still matter? Is it still relevant for sales tax pros guiding their companies today?

The short answer: YES! Especially post-Wayfair…

Attend this webinar to learn all the ways you can benefit from SST whether you register through the SST system or not – from simplified multi-state electronic returns to free tax collection technology services to taxability matrices and beyond.

Craig Johnson, the Executive Director of the SST Project will join Diane to share all the facets of the SST Project and its impact on every taxpayer. The presentation will focus on the value you can derive from SST with practical demonstrations of how to take advantage of key features.

Who should attend?

This webinar is intended for financial and operations personnel—including tax, general accounting, accounts payable, sales, tax technology, purchasing and credit—who deal with sales and use tax as part of their responsibilities. The course is also designed for general practitioners, with minimal to no experience. Additional Details About the Streamlined Sales Tax: Why it Matters and How You Can Benefit Webinar

The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax (SST) organization focuses on reducing complexities in state sales tax systems and improving sales and use tax administration systems for both “main street” businesses and remote sellers for all types of commerce.

Simplification efforts sound great, but how are they put into practice? How can SST help your business?

To start, here are some key features of SST that you should know:

  • A simplified registration process that is free for taxpayers and allows you to register for sales and use tax in as many SST member states as desired on one application.
  • Use of a Certified Service Provider (CSP), which is a software company certified under the SST Agreement, to perform your sales and use tax functions free of charge.
  • A simplified electronic return (SER), which is a uniform, electronically filed return that all SST member states accept. Any seller can use this, not just those using a CSP.

States that adopt the SST Agreement agree to modify their sales and use tax laws to simplify and modernize them and to support the features listed above. These modifications impact all companies doing business in SST states, not just those who register for sales tax through the SST system.

No matter if you’re a remote seller whose sales tax requirements have greatly increased post-Wayfair or an established seller already managing sales and use tax obligations in many states – many benefits of SST may be available to you.

This webinar will explore all the ways SST resources and benefits can save your company time and money. You’ll learn how to wade through all the SST-specific terms and acronyms (there’s a lot, we know!) and acquire clear next-step takeaways to get involved with SST right away.

Your Teaching Staff

In this 90-minute live webinar taught by Diane Yetter of the Sales Tax Institute and Executive Director of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, Craig Johnson, you’ll learn how to take advantage of the many benefits the SST Project offers businesses. Diane and Craig will teach you all the complexity-reducing facets of the SST Project as well as walk you through specific SST tools, charts, and forms so you can get a clear visual of how to use them to your benefit.

Plus, you can get answers to your specific SST questions directly from Diane and Craig during the Q&A portion of the webinar.

Learning Objectives for this webinar include:

  • Learn about all the features of the Streamlined Sales Tax Agreement and how they reduce the burden of sales and use tax compliance for businesses.
  • Discover the benefits of using a Certified Service Provider (CSP) so you can decide if the program is right for your business and potentially take advantage of free sales tax software services.
  • Learn about the differences in audits for CSP users and non-users and the protection from audit liability that may be available to you.
  • Understand how the SST registration system can simplify the registration process to save you time and the headache of navigating many states registration systems.
  • Learn how to use the SST multi-state exemption certificate that you can benefit from even if you’re not registered under SST.
  • Discover how SST simplified electronic returns streamline each period’s sales tax return filing in member states.
  • Get up to date with the latest SST tools and charts like taxability matrices to speed up your tax research.
  • Understand your ability to submit a Compliance Review and Interpretations Committee (CRIC) opinion that acts as a letter ruling for all SST member states.
  • Learn the SST benefits available in non-full member states, like use of a CSP in Pennsylvania and whether other states may follow their lead.
